Men of the Docks by George Bellows (1912)
I spoke on American artist George Bellows, considering how ‘Men of the Docks’ painted in 1912, can broaden our understanding of Western European art within the National Gallery’s collection.
While the painting is influenced by early French modernism, with its abstracted depiction of modern life, it also exemplifies American realism and portrays New York not as a celebration of economic growth but as a reflection of the hardships faced by working-class people living on the outskirts of the city.
It was an honour to represent the Articulation alumni alongside @ollyhousehunter and Qabir Alli. @articulationprize have been a constant support throughout my career since I first took part in the national public speaking prize back in 2019.
